English Editor Level 2 Test — Chicago Manual of Style

Your job is to bring a critical eye to improving the author's content and readying it for publication. This may require drastic reworking of the document.

Editorial Focal Elements

  • Concept — Verify the overall concept is clearly and succinctly communicated.
  • Intended word use — Poor word use results in muddled messages; help the author by improving word choice and sentence structure.
  • Organization — Unless the author is clearly the next James Joyce or Umberto Eco, the content and ideas should flow logically from one idea to the next. This also means that any concept of time conveyed through the narrative is internally consistent.
  • Tone — Help the author maintain the narrative when editing a fiction piece or verify the proper formalities are in place for dissertations and technical writing.
  • Characterization — Verify that character use is consistent by ensuring character personalities, ages, descriptions and actions are consistent.
  • Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling — Absolutely no mistakes are acceptable.
  • Formatting — You are responsible for formatting the document to comply with the Chicago Manual of Style, 16thEdition.
