When RentCycle CEO Tim Hyer recently needed to categorize more than 20,000 rental business websites he turned to CloudCrowd. Tim explains why: "As a startup, I work under tight deadlines all the time. But when faced with the task of processing more than 20,000 records in less than three weeks, I worried my luck had run out. I looked into solutions like Mechanical Turk, but wasn't convinced of the quality of their results. Plus, I didn't have the time to learn how to input the specific jobs and catered the project to my needs. They handled all the logistics related to processing my mountain of data. Before I knew it, I had a clean spreadsheet of organized data that was now properly validated, categorized, and sub-categorized-- with time to spare before my deadline. I have plans for another project in the coming months, and am looking forward to another collaboration."

Once the solution was designed, the CloudCrowd workforce sorted the sites accurately in under a week-- at a fraction of the cost of what it would have cost to hire someone to do it in-house. Hyer was thrilled with the cost, speed, and of course the results, and Rentcycle went on to take top honors as the winning presenter at VatorSplash 2010, a showcase for startup companies sponsored by Vator.tv. As the first online rental marketplace, Rentcycle provides businesses greater visibility to a targeted audience and converts online leads into online sales.

University of Southern California

CloudCrowd is currently working on two solutions for the University of Southern California.

The first project is designed to help the University reconnect with "lost alumni" - those graduates for which the school does not have updated contact information. Given the alums name and year of graduation, CloudCrowd Workers are finding Facebook pages, LinkedIn profiles, and Google references. The University will use this information to unobtrusively reach out and invite these alumni to join an online group where they can reconnect with their alma mater and fellow graduates.

The project is a good example of the power of the Crowd to add relevant information to an existing database. The same application can be used to add social media information to sales leads and provide new ways to understand and connect with your customers.

CloudCrowd is also helping USC's storied athletic program reconnect with former athletes. USC's only comprehensive athletics records for most student athletes are in the original media guides and printed rosters for each sport. They currently have no way to look up a particular player from a specific sport or season, and no way to contact many of their former athletes.

CloudCrowd Workers are entering data from scanned images of the original rosters and media guides to create a master database of nearly every athlete to play at USC for more than 50 years. Each roster is formatted differently, and the information needed changes from year-to-year and sport-to-sport, which makes the project difficult to send off-shore or complete via OCR.
